Update on commercial truck registrations: Milford constituent supports Senator Moore's efforts

A Milford constituent recently wrote to Senator Moore expressing his support for the Senator's efforts in eliminating commercial vehicle fees for private users of dual rear axle vehicles.  Citing the recent Telegram and Gazette article on Senator Moore's work with a Webster constituent on the matter, the Milford constituent describes his own exasperation in having to pay commercial vehicle fees for a 20 year old truck he uses to haul his camper.  Read the message from the constituent below:

Dear Senator Moore,

Having just read an article in the Worcester Telegram concerning the subject issue please add my name to the list of Massachusetts truck owners caught up in this grossly unfair mess. I own a 20 year old Dodge D-350 pick-up that was originally purchased for use with a camper trailer and never used for commercial activity. I have always paid $170 yearly for tags plus the nominal $29 inspection. This past July I was informed that the inspection is $29 plus $95/hr. shop time for D.O.T... Additionally the tag fee increased to $220 yearly. Frankly, I have taken the truck off the road. I can no longer afford owning it. Can you believe that? A twenty year old vehicle?

My truck was simply private use with no commercial activity. If this letter helps convince your fellow legislators to allow us private, non-commercial owners some relief please use it as needed. I understand the Commonwealth needs all the income it can generate however in fairness to the little guy taxpayer this burden is excessive. I doubt many truck owners fall into my category and I suspect the monetary impact on state revenue is negligible; however it remains significant to us owners.

Incidentally, my truck being 20 years old is virtually un-salable here in Massachusetts as result of this additional tax/fee burden.

Thank you,

A Milford Constituent
